Cavtat is a township situated in the southernmost part of the Croatian Adriatic coastline, built on the site of the Roman colony Epidaurum, which was destroyed in the 7th-century Slav and Avar invasions. The beauty of its nature, green lush vegetation, beaches and interesting monuments attract numerous tourists to present-day Cavtat. In the old town of Cavtat there are several sights that are well worth visiting: the birth house of Vlaho Bukovac with a museum, an art-studio and a gallery of paintings of Croatia`s most renowned painter of realism. At the cemetery of Saint Roch, do not miss to visit the mausoleum of the Račić family, a masterpiece of art designed by the most famous Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović. At the Rector`s palace, dating from the 10th-century, you can visit the Collection of Baltazar Bogišić. Once the residence of the Dubrovnik Rector, the palace houses today an art gallery with a rich collection of paintings, sculptures, graphics, ethnographic items and a coin collection, which belonged to the 19th-century lawyer and historian Baltazar Bogišić. You can visit the baroque church of Saint Nicolas too. The church shelters a collection of paintings as well as sacral treasure gathered along the centuries. Cavtat`s hinterland hides the beautiful valley of Konavle, a region especially attractive to tourists due to the hospitality of its inhabitants, who have cherished and preserved their tradition, customs, folklore dances and the unique Konavle traditional costumes, thought to be among the most beautiful ones in Croatia.
